Course Outline:
This course is designed to, safely, introduce new persons to the heavy equipment operating field. In a controlled environment, under the supervision of qualified instructors with Journey person status, trainees are able to gain the much needed experience of operating heavy equipment, to be able to attain with confidence, future employment in this field. Course duration: The program is 240 hours over a four week period utilizing ten hour days, six days per week. Classroom(approx. 20% or 50 hrs) covers: trade practices, industry standards, equipment components, and the applicable OH&S regulations.
Classroom content:
- Trade practices
- Personal protective equipment
- Identify climate extremes
- Importance of tailgate meetings
- Safe rigging practices
- Environmental concerns
Industry standards: Importance of good communication, color code convention, incident report form, hand signals.
Equipment components: Review of equipment manufactures service manuals, attachments and accessories.
OH&S Regulations Review of the applicable regulations for heavy equipment operations. Field Content Pre-operational checks: To be able to complete a walk around inspection of the equipment, fill out the required equipment log books, understand the functions of all the components.
Equipment servicing: Knowledge of all fluid levels and grease points to be checked daily. Knowledge of fluid types to be used and safe fueling procedures.
Equipment operation: Knowledge of all the controls, operational functions and limitations of the equipment. Construction techniques: Pre-job site safety assessment, environmental considerations, operational techniques compliment the Pipeline Equipment Operator Trade.
Student purchase requirements:
It is the responsibility of each student to supply themselves with all the required Personal Protective Equipment: safety vest, hard hat, steel toe boots, work gloves and hearing protection. (we do supply the foam ear pieces that you insert in your ear) Students must supply own transportation to and from training site.
